Karateka is a martial arts action game developed by Jordan Mechner and was originally released for the Apple II in 1984. The game is set in feudal Japan and follows the story of a lone karateka (practitioner of karate) who sets out on a mission to rescue his love interest, the Princess Mariko, from the clutches of the evil warlord Akuma. One of the distinguishing features of Karateka is its cinematic storytelling and rotoscoped animation, which gives the character movements a fluid and realistic look. The Atari 7800 version brought the classic gameplay to console players, challenging them with a mix of combat and strategic pacing in order to defeat Akuma and his guards. It belongs to the fighting game genre.
